A
Feast of Fields, 2001
A
Celebration of "Land Food and Community"
(Vancouver, BC) - The seventh annual Feast of Fields is moving back
to Vancouver! This year's fundraising harvest celebration will happen
on September 9th, 2001 at University of British Columbia's South Campus
Farm. The Feast of Fields is your opportunity to enjoy spectacular
BC food and beverage while exploring this innovative local farm. UBC
Farm aims to retain and integrate existing farm and forest lands at
UBC's point Grey campus. According to Moura Quayle, Dean of the faculty
of Agricultural
Sciences , "UBC Farm is about providing students with the opportunity
to experiment and find hands-on ways to work with the continuum of
land, food and community ". The ultimate goal of the Farm is
to create an internationally significant center for sustainable agriculture
forestry and food systems. Just imagine, by coming out and sampling
delicacies such as fire roasted Nicola Valley venison, with fry bread
and cloud-berry compote, served by "Heron's" Executive Chef
Darryl Nagata, - you are helping to retain precious Vancouver farmland
and create community!
"FarmFolk/CityFolk
is very excited by the opportunity to host our annual fundraiser on
this exceptional piece of land and introduce it to the fine dining
public. UBC Farm represents the best in collaboration between food
producers, researchers, educators and the public"
Herb Barbolet
Executive Director
This Year's event
is inspired by the UBC Faculty of Agricultural Sciences' motto "Land,
Food and Community".
"The Feast
of the Fields is a community event that celebrates the bounty of food
and recognizes the incredible importance of preserving productive
food-lands. On the UBC campus we are realizing our good fortune at
having a working landscape that
can provide sustenance -- both as food and as a place for the "community"
of the university to gather and support. Feast of the Fields is the
first event to help us celebrate this landscape and its potential
gifts to the community".
Moura
Quayle Dean of Faculty of Agricultural Sciences
The Feast of Fields
is a wandering picnic and celebration of local food and beverage.
Over the years it has grown in popularity to become one of the "must
dos" in the "foodie" calendar. Guests literally "graze
the fields" as they roam from one alluring kiosk to the next,
sampling the temptations. Chefs prepare plentiful, elegant, delicacies
featuring seasonal, local foods served on imaginative natural "plates"
such as grape leaves, cedar shakes, oyster shells etc. With glass
and napkin in hand, our guests wander from table to table sampling
the best of BC food and drink! More than 40 of
BC 's finest restaurants,
wineries, micro breweries and food producers will participate in this
year's benefit.
To date some of
the confirmed participants include the Four Seasons Hotel, the Fairmont
Waterfront "Herons", Ashiana Tandoori, Oritalia Restaurant,
Terra Breads, Nyala African Cuisine, Ecco IL Pane, "T",
and the Blue Water Café and Raw Bar. Crannog Ales, Domaine
de Chaberton, Vancouver Island Brewery, Peacock and Martin, Saturna
Island Vineyards, Tinhorn Creek Vineyards, Lang Vineyards and others
will serve fine wine and beer. Producers, such as the Glorious Garnish
Seasonal Salad Company, Snow Farms, North Arm Farm, Yellow Island
Aquaculture, the Cranberry Lady and Edible Farms will also participate.
This year's Feast
will offer site tours emphasizing innovative farming
projects such as the multicultural "Roots and Shoots" garden,
sheep herding demonstrations, mushroom farming techniques and more.
Guests are invited to find-out about the UBC Farm planning process,
explore the new UBC Farm Centre and purchase fresh produce from the
Farm's on-site Market Garden.
There will also
be an author's corner (featuring Barbara JO's Book s to Cooks) and
performances by numerous local entertainers including East Vancouver's
own "Flying Folk Army"(-and others). Come out and celebrate
the fall season at the Feast of Fields!
