Dog
Church Opens In Vermont
VERMONT -
A chapel honouring dogs has opened in a 19th century church in Vermont.
The building is
decorated with stained glass windows showing pictures of dogs and carvings
designed by sculptor Stephen Huneck.
Mr Huneck says he
wanted to create a place where people can connect with themselves and
their dogs, dead or alive. He also believes dogs are an important link
with nature.
The church in St
Johnsbury features a winged Labrador on the steeple and the four pews
are held up by life-sized carvings of seated dogs. The racks that would
usually hold hymn books have copies of Mr Huneck's book, My Dog's Brain.
Instead of listing
services, the announcement board says: "Welcome. All Creeds, All
Breeds. No Dogmas Allowed."
The stained-glass
windows show a dog chasing a ball, a dog being petted, and a dog wearing
a halo. Cards and photos of dozens of pets hang on the walls.
Mr Huneck told The
New York Times: "My personal message is that we've all become so
distanced from nature and dogs are an important link with it.
"It's also
about dogs: it's saying they can be our guides. They can teach us so
much just by their natures. Dogs have an incredible love which they
can teach us."
Visitor Beth Edwards,
from New Hampshire, said: "I love the thought of the recognition
that when your animal passes, it is significant.
"You need what
comfort and solace you can get, just like when a person passes."
