A llama has been recruited to protect a flock of sheep in Canada.
Michael Riding was about to give up his hobby of rearing the sheep
after a number were killed by dogs and coyotes.
Ping, which means peace in Chinese, now wards off predators in Garden
Lots, Nova Scotia.
Mr Riding said: "I don't care if he's a bit of a curmudgeon because
it helps him do his job. He's a bad-tempered llama but I'm quite fond
of him. He's a real character."
In the wild, Ping's natural tendency would be to protect a herd of
his own kind. With no other llamas around, he turns his attention to
sheep, the Canoe website reports.
"They're the next best thing... He regards the sheep as his herd
of llamas," Mr Riding said.
Ping will feature on a Discovery Channel series called Working Animals
alongside guard monkeys in India and guard ostriches in South Africa.
It's due to be broadcast next January.
