Woman Wins Prize for Wackiest Pet
UK -- Spider-mad
Ryan Morgan, the proud owner of more than 50 tarantulas, has scooped
the animal Oscar for Wackiest Pet Owner.
In the animal kingdom's
own star-studded ceremony, Ryan beat off stiff competition from a giant
African land snail called Bart.
He was also up against
Casper the footballing parrot for the honour at the Discovery Animal
Planet Pet Awards, in London.
His collection of
spiders live throughout the family home in Port Talbot, Wales, and includes
Charlie, an eight-inch birdeater which his daughter Heather uses to
frighten off local boys.
A recent shopping
trip for "pet food" ended in disaster with 2,000 live crickets
rampaging through the family home.
The inaugural awards
celebrate heroic pet endeavours and the ceremony was attended by a host
of pets and their owners.
The judging panel
included TV pet experts Chris Packham, Michaela Strachan and Mark Evans.
Ian Campbell's 260ft
descent down a sheer cliff face, battling against rising tides and failing
light to retrieve a fallen dog, earned the policeman, from Aultbea,
Scotland, the Pet Hero Award.
Presenting the individual
awards were weatherman Michael Fish, along with Big Brother's Amma Antwi-Agyei
and Darren Ramsay, TV vet Joe Inglis and animal presenter Shauna Lowry.
The Animal Planet
Pet Awards will be broadcast on Discovery's Animal Planet, at 7.30pm
on September 23, when an overall Pet Winner of Winners will also be
announced.
