A widow has left almost all her £2 million
fortune to help sick and injured animals.
Edna Barclay bequeathed more than half her estate
to the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals.
She divided the rest of the £2.3 million
between other animal charities and her friends and family.
Mrs Barclay, whose husband, Denis, died just
before her, had been an animal lover all her life and made regular
contributions to various charities.
The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth, Devon, and
the Ada Cole Memorial Stables near Harlow, Essex, have also
confirmed they are beneficiaries.
It is believed that Battersea Dogs' Home, the
Anglo-Italian Society for the Protection of Animals and WJ Jordan
Care for the Wild also gained a share of £1 million.
A spokeswoman for the PDSA says Mrs Barclay,
who died in January, donated vast sums to help care for sick
and injured animals since 1956.
"It is one of the largest donations we
have had this year," she said.
"This is really valuable to us and marvellous
for our work. We shall be using it to continue care for sick
and injured animals."
