Revives Dead Patient
CAMBRIDGE -
A surgeon has spoken about how he revived a man who showed no vital
signs of life for 40 minutes.
He carried out emergency surgery after twice being told the patient
was dead.
The 39-year-old Cambridge man has made a full recovery.
Patrick Kelly-Sporle, of Horseheath, had been attending a clinic when
he suffered an aneurysm in his stomach.
Michael Gaunt, a vascular surgeon at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge,
inserted a balloon catheter into Mr Kelly-Sporle's stomach and gently
released the huge build-up of blood.
Mr Kelly-Sporle, who had not been given an anaesthetic, started to
wake up after a few minutes.
"Even after his pulse and blood pressure returned there was still
a chance that he could have suffered massive brain damage, but he has
recovered well, although his balance has been affected," said Mr
Gaunt.
"Throughout my training I'd heard anecdotal evidence of people
in similar situations surviving so I thought it was worth a try. As
I tell trainees now, if somebody is dead it can't really get any worse
for them."
Mr Kelly-Sporle has marked the pending first anniversary of the event
by presenting the surgeon with a gift.
Mr Kelly-Sporle and his wife gave him a paperweight with a clock inside,
with an inscription that read 'The day you gave us back time'. Mr Gaunt
says he "was completely overwhelmed and felt very humbled."
