To Perform Pioneering Heart Operation on Pot Belly Pig
CALIFORNIA --
A California vet is planning to perform a pioneering heart
operation on an animal shelter's pot-bellied pig.
He will repair a leak between Moeshia's heart chambers.
The surgery is thought to be the first of its kind to be done on a
pig.
Ros Lirtzman says his normal charges would be £10,000.
But shelter owner Cindy Holloway says he'll only be charging around
£2,700 for hospital expenses and the use of a heart-lung machine.
He'll perform the operation at the Veterinary Medical and Surgical
Group clinic in Ventura on October 13.
The 19-month-old animal lives with 14 other pot-bellied pigs.
The vet says: "It's the first time I'm aware that this particular
procedure has been performed on a pig. But we're using techniques that
have been used on humans for years."
He told The Bakersfield Californian he hopes the surgery on Moeshia
will lead to more operations on more animals with heart disease.
