Grandfather
Donates Kidney to 4 Year Old
SCOTLAND -
A four-year-old boy has became the first person in Scotland
to be given a kidney from his grandfather.
Ben Ferguson had already defied the odds when he underwent the procedure
at Glasgow's Yorkhill hospital, as it was just the latest in a string
of life-saving operations.
Both Ben and his grandfather 54-year-old Joe Boyd are said to have
made a good recovery since undergoing the surgery five weeks ago.
Doctors first operated on Ben while he was still in the womb, but feared
the worst when his condition deteriorated shortly after he was born
and told his parents, Angela, 31, and Sam, 33, that he was unlikely
to survive.
But after undergoing kidney dialysis and further surgery, Ben started
to recover and was eventually able to receive his grandfather's kidney.
A spokesman for Yorkhill NHS Trust said the case showed how grandparents
could be considered as kidney donors in some instances.
