Researchers Working on Recycleable Plastic
VIRGINIA -
Researchers in Virginia are working on a plastic which can be recycled
by heating it.
Current plastics are made from molecules which are irreversibly linked
so they can't be easily broken down and reused.
The new technique creates plastic with structures which break apart
at the molecular level when they are heated.
Tim Long of Virginia Tech's chemistry department said his team is using
hydrogen bonding and 'living polymerisation techniques' to create plastics
molecules with reversible structures.
He explained: "If you glue something together at the molecular
level, you should be able to take it apart."
Researchers spoke about their work at the American Chemical Society's
222nd national meeting in Chicago.
