Dark Blue
Light May End Jetlag
SURREY -
Dark blue light could be used to prevent travellers from becoming jet-lagged.
New research has discovered a type of cell on the retina sensitive
to short wavelength visible light which transmits information to the
body clock.
Researchers say it may one day be possible to use the cells to 'reset'
disturbed waking and sleeping rhythms.
The University of Surrey research may also have applications for shift
workers and Seasonal Affective Disorder sufferers (or SAD).
Debra Skene and her colleagues proved the system's existence during
a study of 22 volunteers who underwent 215 light exposure trials.
Dr Skene, who had the work published in the Journal of Physiology,
said: "Our findings have exciting future applications, which we
can imagine will be effective in the field of lighting for health."
