Horse Survives
Forked Lightning Strike
ESSEX -An
eight-year-old Pure Arab horse has survived being struck by lightning,
apparently because she was not wearing metal horseshoes.
Sadie was knocked unconscious when the forked lightning struck her
back, leaving her badly bruised and with a singed tail.
The bolt is believed to have earthed through the soil.
The bay-coloured horse was in her field at Lawford in Essex when the
incident happened.
Owner Thelma Scrutton, 47, told the Evening Gazette: "There was
a sheet of lightning, a crash of thunder and then forked lightning.
"After that there was a cloud of sulphurous orange smoke, so I
knew something must have been hit."
At first, Sadie started to run backwards and act strangely, but now
she is beginning to get back to her old self and is on medication until
she fully recovers.
"I'm absolutely amazed that she is still with us," said Mrs
Scrutton, who has had the horse since it was four weeks old.
"I've never heard of a horse that has been struck by lightning
and yet managed to survive."
