A mystery Santa
has left behind presents and sweets for all 181 children at a Hamburg
school's nursery.
Police were
called to the kindergarten after an alarm was set off by someone
prising open a window.
The intruder
had fled, but officers discovered nothing was missing and gifts
had been left in the shoes of every pupil.
Shoe-filling
is a Christmas tradition in Germany like the filling of stockings.
Police spokesman
Joerg Lauenroth said: "This really was someone who wanted to
act as Father Christmas.
"Whoever
it was had spent up to £200 on all this chocolate, sweets
and little presents and came in here and filled up all the little
shoes. It was someone who wanted to do something good.
"Nothing
was stolen and nothing was damaged but whoever it was did not realise
that such places are alarmed which is why we were called to the
scene.
"We have
checked that the chocolates and sweets are alright to eat and have
decided they are and have ended our investigation."
The spokesman
said several witnesses had reported seeing a man dressed in red
- and even with a sack thrown over his shoulder - running away from
the building.
