Swiss scientists
have developed a way of halving the time it takes to fix a broken
bone.
No plaster cast
is needed so physiotherapy can begin almost straight away.
Surgeons insert
a plate just above the surface of the bone and insert tiny screws
through keyhole surgery.
The Locking
Compression Plate is different from other medical plates because
it doesn't rest on the bone and so allows blood to reach its surface.
Trials have
seen it reduce recovery time by as much as six to eight weeks. Although
it costs more it can save money in the long run by allowing the
patient to return to work more quickly.
It was developed
at the AO Foundation in the ski resort of Davos, according to The
Times.
