Berlin's Philharmonic Orchestra is giving out free sweets to its
audience in special silent wraps.
The aim is to cut down on coughing and rustling noises during performances.
And an overhead projector will light up a huge notice on stage
reminding people to switch off mobile phones.
Orchestra head Franz Ohnesorg announced the measures, which he
said had worked for him in the New York Carnegie Hall.
"Noises in the audience disturb the musicians as much as the
other people trying to listen," he said.
This week the Halle Orchestra was forced to stop a performance
in Manchester when a mobile phone belonging to a member of the audience
would not stop ringing.
Conductor Jac van Steen was so annoyed he shouted out, "If
that's my wife, tell her I'm not here."
Eventually the mystery owner of the phone managed to switch it
off and the concert continued.
