A former Australian commando is preparing to leap
from a balloon, 25 miles above the ground.
Rodd Millner, wants to become the world's highest
skydiver with his attempt from the edge of space, planned for
early next year.
He hopes to freefall for six minutes before opening
his parachute, touching down 30 miles from Ayers Rock.
The 37-year-old said: "A man in space has
never achieved this, but research indicates the transmission will
be safe and smooth."
However, Rodd has been warned by scientists the
descent through 'near-space' could be so fast, his head will explode,
reports The Sunday Times.
Rodd, who is backed by the Australian Defence
Force Academy and media companies, plans to ascend in a gondola
beneath a specially built balloon which will inflate as it rises.
At 130,000ft he will jump out, wearing a pressurised
space suit and with a camera attached to his body so millions
of viewers can watch live, on TV.
A spokesman for the Space Jump project's scientific
team said: "Anything beyond 60,000ft is known as the dead
zone. No one really knows what might happen to Rodd. That's why
he needs a pressurised space suit - he'll be diving from the edge
of space."
