A Swiss designer has invented a dining table with chairs which
rotate around it so nobody sits opposite the same person all evening.
It is meant to encourage diners to mingle with the other guests
at a dinner party.
A hidden chain pulls each diner around the table while a second
one makes sure their meal keeps up with them.
Paolo Rais, a civil engineer from Lugano, came up with the idea
after attending one dinner party too many.
New Scientist reports his design sits 18 people, is powered from
the electrical mains and travels at nine centimetres per minute.
A film of the table in operation appears on the website set up
to market the table under the name Dynamic Meetings.
Rais said: "I've written to the British Royal family, because
such a table would be a great way for the Queen to meet all her
guests at banquets. But I have had no reply."
A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman told Ananova: "We get sent
all sorts of things."
