72 Year Old Climbs 1/2 Way Up Mt Everest
With 2 Walking Sticks
A 72-year-old woman has climbed halfway up Mount Everest
with the aid of two walking sticks.
Margaret Wight, of East Lothian, crossed rope bridges
and endured freezing temperatures during the trip.
She raised £4,000 for charity by reaching her
destination - an altitude of 17,600ft.
Mrs Wright from Elphinstone told the Edinburgh Evening
News: "We had to continually cross the Everest River on these wobbly
rope bridges. Some of the wooden slats had holes and the yaks would
cause the bridge to swing, it was extremely scary.
"They were very unstable and the sherpas, who thought
it was amazing that I was doing it at my age, would hold my hand to
help me across."
Organisers say they're amazed at her achievement, but
Mrs Wight says it's down to months of training.
"I spent months at the gym on the bikes and treadmills
to build up the strength in my legs," she says.
