Solar Car Race To Begin
The very latest solar cars are gathering in Australia
to take part in the 2001 World Solar Challenge.
A field of 38 vehicles representing 11 countries will
be competing in the 1,860-mile event which runs between Darwin and Adelaide.
The race begins on Sunday and the first cars are expected
to take the chequered flag three days later.
There is also a 12-bike solar cycle event beginning
in Alice Springs on Monday which runs seven daily stages of around 124
miles per day.
Last year's winner, Aurora from Victoria in Australia,
is back and Mad Dog will be the only British entrant.
The World Solar Challenge began in 1987 when 22 cars
from seven countries were beaten by General Motor's 'Sunraycer' which
averaged nearly 41 mph.
