The word of the year is "9-11" as voted by the American
Dialect Society.
Their members voted for the word because of its significance and
its almost universal adoption after the New York terrorist attacks.
Word voted Least Likely to Succeed was Osamaniac - meaning a woman
sexually attracted to Osama bin Laden.
Other awards include:
Most Euphemistic: Daisy-Cutter Bomb" used by US Air Force.
Most Useful: A tie between Facial-Profiling - videotaping a crowd
to identify criminals and terrorists; and "second-hand speech"
or overheard mobile phone conversations.
Most Creative: Shuicide-Bomber - terrorist with bomb in shoes.
Most Inspirational: Let's Roll! -the words of Todd Beamer, who
tackled one of the terrorists on a hijacked plane on September 11.
The awards were announced by Professor Wayne Glowka of Georgia
College and State University, chair of the New Words Committee of
the American Dialect Society, at a ceremony in San Francisco.
