The Dutch government is about to announce whether it will back
the production of a flying car.
The gyrocopter could be used by emergency services as a way of
avoiding traffic jams.
The modified design has taken into account recommendations made
by the Dutch transportation ministry.
Staff at the Technical University of Delft designed the gyrocopter
which runs off a small diesel engine, according to the De Telegraaf
newspaper.
It can reach speeds of 74 miles per hour on the road and twice
that in the air. A driver needs only the lowest grade of flying
certificate to pilot it.
John Bakker, the machine's 43-year old inventor, said: "The
prototypes are doing very good. The gyrocopter now only needs a
field of 50 metres to take off. It takes even less to land because
the gyrocopter can land vertically."
It isn't the first time Dutch industry has developed plans for
a flying car but legislation and lightweight materials now make
its production more likely.
