A friendship between a Kenyan lioness and an antelope calf is baffling
wildlife experts.
The lioness would usually eat the oryx, but the animals have been
seen walking and resting together with the intimacy of a mother
and calf.
Experts suggest reasons for the friendship could be the similarity
in looks of the oryx to a lion cub, and the lioness losing the company
of its pride.
Tourists have flocked to Serena Samburu wildlife reserve to see
the unlikely pair, reports the Daily Nation.
Herman Mwasaghua, a worker at Samburu, was one of the first people
to spot them. He said: "It's incredible. This is either an
extraordinary case of maternal instinct or simply the eighth wonder
of the world."
Serena Samburu nature expert Vincent Kapeen said "The lioness
became fond of the calf, maybe because it had lost the company of
its pride and was feeling lonely. What is baffling is why the relationship
has lasted so long."
Samburu County Council rangers have ruled out separating the pair,
preferring to let nature take its course.
