A successful Scottish businessman is offering grants to students
from low income families to help them go to university.
John Burns who now lives in Wales will offer awards of £1,000
a year saying he is appalled at the level of debt students are in.
He has advertised in the local paper and at local schools and colleges
and is helping students studying a variety of subjects.
Mr Burns studied at Glasgow University during the 1960s and recalls
the days of receiving a local authority grant.
He hopes his action will help shame the Government into making
a U-turn on grants and tuition fees.
He said: "Instead of reversing the pressure on students, the
Government has squeezed them a bit tighter."
He went on: "One of Tony Blair's catchphrases is 'education,
education, education' but the Government has made it even more difficult
for students. When you read about how much debt students are getting
into - I thought I could at least do something on a local basis."
Mr Burns plans to continue the scheme next year.
