The Background Story:
Although the NFTS focus has moved far beyond Positive News in recent years, the NFTS project was first founded In February 1998 BC Journalist & show producer / host Nicole Whitney who launched the first ever positive news newspaper in the Vancouver B.C. area. Whitney previously worked as a reporter for BC newspapers like The Province, The Langley Times & The Tricity News over nearly 2 decades. Her intent at the time was to create a living breathing positive example for mainstream media.
"The saying good news doesn't sell" seemed dismissive and inaccurate. We had to redefine 'good news' because I knew that people did not ENJOY being placed in a state of fear. In my book, it's fear that doesn't 'sell'," explains NFTS Founder/Publisher Nicole Whitney.
And so began the positive news publication - then called "KNOW NEWS" which Nicole ran on shoestring budget (for a very small shoe). In the first 2 years, the small positively-focused community paper was delivered monthly and well received, but not strongly supported by advertisers in the community.
In it's second year, the paper was aptly renamed as "THE PHOENIX" and its website launched where monthly issues of the Phoenix were posted for all to see. (www.phoenixnews.bc.ca) Although the online site wasn't given much attention, we soon discovered that the site had mysteriously risen to #1 on yahoo for positive sites throughout the world.
It was then in December of 2000, that the newspaper began evolving into News for the Soul.
Then September 11th happened.
And by September 13th, Nicole had interviewed several leaders in the world consciousness movement about the conscious perspective (and soul-ution) to 9 11. One of those icons was Dannion Brinkley (Saved by the Light / At Peace in the Light). That was when Dannion Brinkley came on board as News for the Soul's contributing editor, lending his name to the project in support of NEWS FOR THE SOUL.
And after another year or two of synchronicity and adventure, the weekly radio show launched in June 2002, airing throughout BC Canada on CFUN 1410 - it's home for the next 2+ years . . . until the next evolutionary leap would occur. As of JUNE 2oo4, News for the Soul was airing on various U.S. radio stations as well as online at www.newsforthesoul.com.
