"uniting
the world with English"
| CSLI (Canadian
as a Second Language Institute) is a unique international English
located in the Yaletown area of downtown Vancouver. |
Owned and operated
by Lori-Ann and Lawrence Keenan for the last 10 years, it focuses
on bringing cultures together with the purpose of developing greater
tolerance and understanding of cultures through a common language.
Over 10,000 students have come together from over 70 countries
since 1992.
| CSLI, through
its staff, homestay families and its students, have encouraged greater
awareness of world events through fund-raising abroad (including
such causes as disaster and war relief in Peru, Turkey, Kosovo,
Kobe (Japan), Honduras, Korea) as well as local efforts (such as
Police Support Against Domestic Violence, Canadian Volunteers Abroad,
Vancouver Food Bank for The Homeless, the Annual Terry Fox Run for
Cancer Research and Vancouver Children Charity Club). In addition
CSLI sponsors four underprivileged children overseas who are being
supported as they grow, so that once they are old enough, they will
in turn be provided English classes at CSLI. |
Students
at CSLI, as part of their English education also contribute to the
community through volunteer and intern positions in non-profit and
businesses in the Vancouver community. Included in this program
is the opportunity for foreign students to make presentations at
local schools about their countries. A number of students come from
Quebec, and while learning English, they also offer overseas students
insight into Canada's other official language and culture. Through
the CSLI homestay program, students also have the chance to truly
experience living Canada by sharing in a Canadian family's home.
