Integrating Traditional
& Innovative Approaches to Physical Health!
Introduction
Fredric graduated
from the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada) in 1976
with a Bachelor of Science in Rehabilitation Medicine with qualifications
to become a Physical or Occupational Therapist. He quickly gravitated
towards hands-on orthopedic manual therapy. He recalls starting his
first day of his professional career as a physical therapist at the
Worker’s Compensation Board Rehabilitation Clinic in Vancouver covered
with penicillin-induced allergic hives from dealing with a then recent
ear infection!
Being of Doukhobor-Christian
descent and Russian roots, in 1977 he fulfilled his desire to travel
and explore his Russian roots by accepting an invitation to complete
a one year preceptorship in Moscow, U.S.S.R. at the Central
Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedics.
Here he quickly
learned the difference between the Russian terms for one’s "backside"
and the "low back" where his professional interests lay! He received
a
Certificate
of Post-Graduate Medical Studies from the Institute for studies
in acupuncture, Ryodo-raku therapy, and the delivery of orthopaedic
medical services within the Soviet health-care system. Although he is
outside a Russian milieu, he continues to be fluent in Russian
and communicates in French as well!
Fredric opened his
first out-patient therapy clinic in Vancouver in 1980. He remained the
owner and operator of a multidisciplinanry therapy clinic for 20 years.
In July 2001, he was invited to work with one of his professional mentors,
Mr. Howard L. Jones, Registered Physiotherapist—highly respected for
his many years as a leading-edge teacher and practitioner of craniomandibular
orthopaedics.
Since the spring
of 2003, Fred offers his integrated therapy services from three (3)
Greater Vancouver locations:
- 3618 Tanner Street,
Vancouver, B.C.
- 208-6011 Westminster
Highway, Richmond, B.C. (Howard Jones & Associates-Physiotherapists)
- 678 Leg-in-Boot
Square, Vancouver, B.C. (False Creek Health Centre)
Fredric
Samorodin’s Professional Background
Fred has extensive
post-graduate training in various methods of osteopathic manual therapy.
In 1986, he began studying CranioSacral Therapy TM with the Upledger
Institute (www.upledger.com) He had previously
studied various osteopathic manual therapy approaches with Dr. Loren
Rex, D.O. at the Ursa Foundation. Very quickly, Fred shifted to craniosacral
therapy as his main therapeutic method. He has studied and volunteered
his time in assisting in many Upledger Institute-sponsored training
workshops in CranioSacral Therapy. As a result of his participation
he became a
Certified Clinical Assistant in CranioSacral Therapy Studieswith
the Upledger Institute for a time. He has also studied Visceral Manipulation,
Zero Balancing, Trauma Release Therapy, SomatoEmotional Release and
Myofascial Release Therapy. He is thankful to have had a long-term professional
association with Mr. Howard L. Jones, RPT as a mentor and more recently
as an associate. Howard has had a significant influence on Fred’s application
of CranioMandibular Orthopaedics and Full Body Fascial Facilitation
through the body’s bioelectric and biodynamic fields.
In addition to Fred’s
manual therapy work, he has been published as a contributing author
to a medical text-book, The Malalignment Syndromeby Dr. Wolf
Schamberger, M.D., et al. (Churchill Livingstone, 2002) in which
he describes some the manual therapy approaches available to therapists
and physicians helping patients deal with the health impact of a physically
malaligned musculoskeletal system.
His interest and
efforts in helping clients with chronic fatigue and the fibromyalgia
syndrome led him to work with a local health professional. Chanchal
Cabrera, R.H.T., who dealt with her own fibromyalgia problems mentions
Fred’s work in her book Fibromyalgia: Journey
to Healing(Contemporary Books, 2002).
Personal
Background
Fredric is married
to Isabelle and has a son, Misha (1992) and a daughter, Natasha (1995)
He comes from a musical background particularly in vocal music. His
mother has been the director of the Nelson Ladies Doukhobor Choir for
over 35 years and his father is a well-known lyricist in the Doukhobor
community. Having sung a cappela in Doukhobor choirs as a youth,
Fredric expanded his vocal experience with 4 years as a member of the
Vancouver Bach Choir and 3 years as a member of the Gloria Ensemble.
He combined this with 2 years of part-time vocal training with Professor
Nikolai Kolesnikov from Vancouver and formerly of the Moscow Institute
of Theatrical Arts. In 2002, Fred joined the High Spirits Community
Choir in Vancouver (www.highspiritschoir.ca)
where he continues to enjoy music-making with a message!
Professional
Services
Fredric Samorodin,
Registered Physical Therapistworks primarily using gentle, osteopathically-based
craniosacral therapy.
Craniosacral therapy is a gentle method of
detection and correction that encourages one’s own natural healing mechanisms
to dissipate the negative effects of stress on one’s central nervous
system.Fred also helps integrate and advise clients
on:
- activities of
daily living
- rehabilitation
exercise
- nutritional support
- therapeutic devices
- multidisciplinary
teamwork.
Whether the client
is recovering from a motor vehicle accident, has fibromyalgia, vocal
strain, stomach acid-reflux problems, jaw pain or back pains, craniosacral
therapy and an integration of all useful osteopathic bodywork techniques
that compliment this work, described as full
body fascial facilitation, may provide the missing link to
regaining optimal health!
Fred’s professional
and personal background has allowed him to offer manual therapy to the
area of voice physical therapy for occlusal (bite) and postural
alignment, as well as tongue, throat and voice mobilization.
Research shows that adjusting a person’s bite benefits one’s
voice quality, Kirveskari, et al, (1988)
Thus Fred can work
with dental and medical specialists using CranioMandibular
Orthopaedicsto help patients undergoing orthodontic, bite-splint
therapy, or denture fittings. These manual therapy techniques are used
to help restore the ability of the skull to adapt to the changes brought
about in the mouth. Fred frequently works inside the mouth!
Other Services
- Fred also advises
clients dealing with chronic auto-immune conditions on the use of
glyconutrients and nutritional supplements to support joint tissue,
compromised immune and hormonal systems, and digestive functions.
He works in association with Ms D. Lutz, Holistic Health Consultant
(Mannatech Associate) www.glyco.com/bestsugars)
to provide the best information and products available to optimize
nutritional health
.
- Since 1994 Fred
has had continuing positive experiences with providing clients with
biomagnetic and bioceramic sleep systems and other health products
for improved quality of sleep, and freedom of movement
as an Independent Nikken Wellness Consultant. (www.5pillars.com/010553400
)
- He has extensive
experience in prescribing foot orthotics
to help assist individuals
in supporting good postural alignment and movement.
- To help fibromyalgia
patients assess their recovery process, Fred offers safe, comfortable
bodymappingsessions that periodically
detail the changes in soft-tissue fluid congestion in response to
guaifenesin and other treatment protocols an individual may be testing.
How does Fred Samorodin’s
work nourish his soul?
Fred Samorodin has
found great satisfaction in his professional work following the dictum
the "If you help people get what they want, you
will get what you want!"Therefore each session with Fred
has the potential to be a problem-solving session which starts with
listening to the patient! The next step is to observe what the physical
body displays. With every client, he observes subtle physical signs
of balance or imbalance. Finally, Fred gains a very detailed and dynamic
"internal" picture through touch of what is going on with a person’s
body while providing therapy.
Fred continues to
explore the frontiers of the art of human touch. He has developed a
very high level of touch through which he helps people connect with
their mind/body on their way to better health. The privilege of being
in "touch" with each client nourishes Fred’s soul!
He is reminded from
his readings by Thomas W. Myers how, in Modern society, we have concentrated
our learning on what we see and what
we hear that we have become "numb"
in what we feel—a condition Myers
calls "kinesthetic dystonia". Fred is honored to have been given a kinesthetic
talent. When combined with his professional "intellectual" knowledge,
such as body structure or function, he finds great satisfaction in sharing
his "feelings" with clients to help them achieve better health and wellness.
Freedom
of Movement!
Before
everything is about to fail
Let
me balance your posture
From
your head to your tail.
Then
you will clearly see
That
I’ll take the time each session
To
set your body free
To
Move!
