Dear News for the
Soul;
I have been trying,
unsuccessfully, to track down a good news story that
seems to have been almost completely overlooked or ignored by the
mainstream media. I am hoping, because of your interest in good news,
that
you may be able to help me locate it.
The Friday prior
to September 11, I caught a brief news item (with video)
on one of the Canadian networks (didn't catch which one) about a
15-year-old quadruple amputee who had just swum one of the Great Lakes.
I
couldn't believe what I was seeing, as I watched her march into the
water
on her thigh stumps, swim accompanied by her mentor/coach in a kayak,
and
then emerge triumphant at (I think) Toronto's waterfront. I was blown
away! I wanted to find out more about this young woman, to write her
and
tell her what an inspiration I found her, and how wonderful I think
she is.
But I didn't even have her name. I figured there would be great stories
on
the sports pages the next morning. But there was nothing. So I thought
there would be something in Monday's paper. Again, nothing. And Tuesday
of course drove everything else out of people's minds.
I tried searching
the web, trying sports outlets, CBC and CTV, swimming
websites and anything else I could think of. No response. I would think
at this point that I had imagined the whole thing, but I know what I
saw.
And I saw a teenager with only her upper arms and legs complete a swim
that
most able-bodied swimmers couldn't complete. And I am determined to
find
her.
If I do, I would
like to share her story with others, through News For The
Soul. Can you help me?
Sincerely
Jean Freeman
