Ethics in Action Award Winners - 1998 Fine Printers, Fine Place reprinted from our July 1998 archive story by nicole m whitney, dgnd
Vancouver - Metropolitan Fine Printers president George Kallas says he was surprised at his recent Ethics in Action nomination - and win. "We try to be low key all the time. We do a lot of things but always low key. It's a real honour. I guess some people have noticed." Metropolitan Fine Printers of Vancouver has many good deeds under its belt including: sharing profits and decision making with employees using biodegradable vegetable based inks and recycling paper and other materials "whenever possible" funding the purchase of over 300 books and videos for the Canuck Place Children's Hospice being the first corporate site in Canada for training of a guide dog through the Canadian National Institute for the Blind sponsoring the Metropolitan Scholarship Fund for graphic design students donating printing services for disabled skiers, the Vancouver Art Gallery, Children's hospital, the Make a Wish Foundation, Operation Smile and much more Metropolitan Fine Printers has also supported its community by supplying its high quality printing services at cost for organizations like the Vancouver Opera, the Vancouver Recital Society, the Vancouver Symphony, the Endeavour Society, the Vancouver Dragon Boat Festival, the Variety Club Telethon and the XI International Aids Conference. "We have received many national and International awards for the quality (printing). Not only is receiving this award good for Metropolitan, it';s good for the entire printing industry," Kallas said. "Printers are an important part of the business community and this award is an acknowledgment of that ." Kallas told News for the Soul that the win was a pleasant surprise. After hearing about his nomination for the Ethics in Action award, he read a list of the committee's criteria and was surprised. "I couldn't believe it. We do every single one of these things! There's not one thing here that we don't do. I that ' wow - that's really neat ' ." Kallas attributes the success of Metropolitan to its business values, ethics and incredibly positive outlook on life. "I'm a very positive person. Being negative - it just doesn't work. If people come to work in this company and they're not positive, they don't fit in here and they know it too."
