Best Detox Foods

I have received a number of emails recently asking what are the best detoxification foods. As usual, my answer is not straight forward – it depends. Ayurvedic medicine is hugely involved with detoxing the body. They utilize a wide variety of methods and three major steps in the process:

  • Preparing the body for detoxification
  • The specific type of detoxification
  • Restoring the body after detoxification

And the specific protocol was very dependent on your body’s current state of health.

Okay so let’s look at a few of the issues that determine your protocol:

  • Depends on the health of the body
  • Depends on the health of the exit systems, ie., your gastro-intestinal tract, your respiratory system, your urinary system
  • Depends on what you are attempting to eliminate, ie., general buildup, specific metal toxins, unhealthy fatty acids, etc

Why should we be looking at the health of the body – should any kind of detoxication be of benefit? The reason we need to look at the health of body concerns issues like:

  • The body may be too weak in general
  • The body may have other health issues that need to be resolved first
  • Or conversely, maybe detoxing the body will clean up other health issues
  • The body may be too overwhelmed: psychological stress; physical stress; other pre-existing conditions that may have prevented the body from naturally detoxing; compounding issues that are resulting because of the toxic buildup
  • The body may be lacking in given nutrients -which may make things worse than better

Why does it depend on the health of the exit systems? Whether you are looking at the large and small intestines, the kidney and bladder, or the heart and respiratory system, if they are already plugged up then adding more toxic compounds to the system is simply going to make things worse. An analogy might be your bathroom toilet – putting in some cleaner to release backup will only make matters if the system is clogged because of the exit to the city system. You would need to clean the city system and then help your specific toilet to drain.

Further, if the problem is in the city system, then cleaning that system up may simply allow your personal system to flow naturally or conversely, it may need a little help to get started.

Why does detoxing depend on what you want to detox? Well, different herbs, spices, foods, supplements will have an impact on:

  • Different heavy metal toxins
  • Different environmental toxins
  • Different pharmaceutical toxins
  • Different natural body compounds, i.e., oxidation of different types of HDL or LDL
  • Different non-natural body compounds, i.e., AGEs, or different types of amyloid buildup or Lewy bodies

So what if we want to be healthy and want to make sure that we are detoxing in a healthy and effective manner?

The following are some general rules of thumb:

  • Make sure you are getting enough of the following in your diet:
    1. Magnesium – most are deficient
    2. Amino acids – use a good brand of hemp oil
    3. Minerals – use a good Himalayan salt, generously
    4. Lots of good fibers – hard, tart apples; raw carrots, etc.
    5. Healthy omega 3 fats – flax/hemp/chia seeds, avocados, etc.
    6. Good spectrum of sulphur compounds, i.e., garlic, onions, etc.
    7. Good spectrum of polyphenol foods, i.e., cloves, curry/turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, oregano, seeds, nuts, cocoa, vegetables in general, etc.
    8. Incorporating foods with a broad range of nutrients, ie., did you know that 100% chocolate has over 1400 nutrient compounds the body uses
  • Make sure you are eliminating the following from your diet:
    1. Sugars, i.e., flours, breads/baking, junk foods, cereals, vitamin water, sodas, ketchup
    2. Foods that turn into sugar quickly, i.e., oranges, potatoes, rice,
    3. Unnatural foods – GMO foods, processed foods, microwaved foods, synthetic foods, fast foods
    4. alcohol
  • Make sure you have a healthy gut, lungs, and urinary system – if not address those first
  • If you are taking any kind of pharmaceutical drug, make sure you know what the interactions might be:
    1. The drug may be causing the problem or compounding the problem
    2. The drug may be depleting you of nutrients
    3. Detoxification may deplete the drug in your system or interfere with the usefulness of the drug

Once you have taken care of these issues, then you may want to increase or focus on the following foods to help detox the body:

  • Spices/Herbs
    1. Allium family: chives, garlic, onions, leeks, scallions
    2. Cilantro – good for heavy metals
    3. Parsley
  • Vegetables
    1. Broccoli
    2. Chard
    3. Chicory
    4. Cruciferous foods: bok choys, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower,
    5. Greens: beet, collard, dandelion, mustard, turnip
    6. Lettuces: arugula, endive/chicory, red leaf, green leaf, kale, romaine
    7. Spinach
    8. Squash: pumpkin
  • Fruit
    1. Grapefruit, lemons, lime

Remember glutathione is hugely important for the detoxification system, so you want to make sure you are taking foods that support the body’s production of glutathione. And glutathione is hugely dependent on fiber to exit the body.

Bottom line?  Detoxification is hugely important, but it needs to be done effectively with knowledge and understanding. Seek the guidance of a good health practitioner.
