You have probably heard by now that sugar is a toxin. There is a ton of information on the internet and the news about sugar and how detrimental it can be.

We need to be aware that sugar causes a lot of challenges.

  • Sugar can obviously cause weight gain – that is what it has historically been linked to, but sugar does far more than that
  • Sugar is a toxin to the body that the body has to manage putting an added stress load on the body
    1. Hi sugar intakes lead to AGEs – there are over 100 different advanced glycation Endproducts. They attach to cells and cause a variety of dysfunctions including cellular death (necrosis) and cancer
    2. AGEs lead to amyloids – there are many types of amyloids. They typically block blood vessels and interfere with neural function
  • Sugars destroy telomeres. When born you have about 1500 telomere units at the end of each DNA strand. They help to keep the DNA organized and support the cell replication process. Many things shorten the telomeres, various toxins, free radicals, metal toxicity, insufficient nutrients, etc. glutathione provokes the telomere enzyme that actually helps provoke telomeres!! But sugar will shorten the telomeres causing premature cellular aging.
  • Energy – sugar drains your energy. If you have been feeling tired lately, look at your sugar consumption. Sugar can initially spike your energy, but then you suffer the hypoglycemic drain afterwards aka sugar crash. Sugar can also decrease the amount of time you spend in the deep healing sleep.
  • High blood pressure and heart disease – sugar can lead to inflammation, high triglycerides, and blood pressure issues all of which are major risk factors for heart disease. It used to just be the table salt that was a major concern for high blood pressure, but now it is recognized that sugar may even be a worse culprit. Causes issues with the heart, the blood vessels and the kidneys.
  • Cholesterol – high sugar content raises your LDL and lowers your HDL and impacts the enzymes that break down the cholesterols
  • Inflammation – whether due to the glycogen in the liver; or the access free radicals; or the access AGEs; or the amyloids – all are associated with inflammation
  • Fatty liver – sugars, and especially fructose – yes that’s the natural sugar in fruit – is linked with a fatty liver. The liver converts fructose into energy or stores it as glycogen. If too much glycogen gets stored, then the liver turns it into fat. And whala, we have a non-alcoholic fatty liver disorder and cause inflammation and scarring in the liver. That in turn can lead to all kinds of things when you consider that the liver supports all the other organs and functions in the body.
  • Depression – blood sugar swings affect the neurotransmitters in the brain and results in neural inflammation, depression and anxiety a long with irritability and frustration
  • Aggression – both hyper and hypo glycemia, meaning both the initial sugar high and the resulting sugar low can cause abnormal irritability, frustration, anger and rage – resulting in physical aggression – none of which are pretty
  • Dementia – high sugar content can certainly cause a variety of dementias – whether it be the sugar in the blood; or the AGEs attacking brain cells; or the beta amyloids blocking the system – sugar is a huge toxin to the brain
  • Diabetes – while only 30% of those overweight have diabetes, 80% of those with diabetes have a weight issue – so one might question what is really causing what. However, we do know that high sugar consumption drives ‘insulin resistance’ and eventually the pancreas just can’t produce anymore insulin
  • Cancer – high amounts of sugar increases cancer in the esophagus, small intestine and the cavity surrounding the heart and lungs
  • Kidneys – high sugar levels can cause damage to the small blood vessels in the kidneys causing kidney disease and kidney stones
  • Acne – blood sugar spikes cause an increase in androgen secretion, oil production, inflammation and they all play a role in acne
  • Accelerated aging processes in the skin. The resulting AGEs damage collagen and elastin – proteins that keep the skin looking youthful
  • Dental issues – high sugar content alters the pH of the mouth and support the bad bacteria in your mouth. Then both the bad bacteria and the acidity can rot your teeth
  • Gout – when your body breaks down fructose, you release purines – purines in turn create a uric acid build up in the blood – the uric acid hardens and forms crystals that lodge in your toes, knees and other joints

Many people will argue that they don’t eat a lot of sugar, but that is before they find out what sugar is in

  • Soda and energy drinks and sports drinks – okay so most everybody knew that
  • Fruit juice – can be upwards of 300% more sugar than the actual fruit
  • Other drinks – chocolate milk, flavoured coffees, iced tea, vitamin water, bottled smoothies, liquor, sparkling waters
  • Junk food: deserts, chocolate bars, puddings, ice cream, candies, pancakes,
  • Fast foods: not just the regular fast foods, instant meals (instant oatmeal)
  • Condiments: BBQ sauce, ketchup,
  • Grains: white bread, brown bread, couscous (another form of pasta), pasta and spinach pasta
  • Processed foods: spaghetti sauce, pre-made soups, breakfast cereals
  • Canned food: canned fruit, baked beans
  • But what about so-called healthy foods?
    1. Yogurt – watch for the sugar content
    2. Granola bars
    3. Protein bars
    4. Cereal bars
  • Fruit: bananas, cherries, pomegranates, grapes, figs, dried fruit,
  • Vegetables: rutabaga, beets, squashes, green peas, corn,
  • Nuts: almond paste, roasted chestnuts, pistachios, dry roasted nuts,

So I hear some people whining, ‘well, what can I eat then?” there are lots of healthy good foods to choose from:

  • Fruit: hard tart apples, olives, avocados, berries (strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, cranberries, blueberries), pears, cooked tomatoes, real chocolate
  • Vegetables: mushrooms, bell peppers, watercress, leafy greens (spinach, beet, kale, turnip), lettuces, bok choy, collards, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, seaweed, yams, Brussel sprouts, asparagus, carrots,
  • Breakfast cereals: cream of wheat, steel cut oats
  • Grains: sourdough, rye, whole grain and sprouted
  • Dairy: many cheeses – especially the ones with high bacterial count; low sugar Greek yogurt, kefir, raw milk,
  • Fermented and pickled foods; making your own are much better
  • Herbs and spices: cilantro, garlic, ginger,
  • Legumes: good for proteins – most of them should be soaked first and properly prepared
  • Nuts: almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, pecans
  • Seeds: flax, hemp, chia,
  • Meat: eggs; unprocessed – gently cooked organic meat and poultry, fish and seafood (trout vs salmon)
  • Drinks: good healthy water, herbal teas, organic coffee, home made fruit juice, kombuchas, almond milk (without the sugar), any of the unsweetened nut milks

And that’s just a start. When you start eating healthy, those sugary foods and drinks start becoming “Oh yuck”. I look forward to the day when everyone will go “Oh yuck” to crap food. And just focus on eating healthy whole non-GMO real food.
