Exercises to balance the Prana (in-breath) and the Apana (Out-breath) as taught by Yogi Bhajan   It is the balance of praana and apaana which creates the power, the central being, the equilibrium being. The Supreme being will awaken in you only when the praana and apaana both work together. One gives the power and the other eliminates negativity. If you cannot balance your body (in this posture), it means that your apaanic shakti, the eliminating force, is not in balance.   Balancing Praana and Apaana Novemher 1984 8
  1. Come onto your hands and knees and raise the left leg up and raise the right arm up straight in front. This posture will balance and strengthen the apaanu energy. 3 Minutes. Change sides and continue 2 1/2 Minutes.
  2. Stand on your knees with your arms straight up over your head. Stabilize yourself by drawing in the navel point so that you can feel the tops of your feet pressing into the floor. Lift your chest and bend backward, stretching away from the lower back. Begin to move your arms and neck in a circle; your shoulders will move but your knees will not move. This is Sohagni Kriya, the kriya of virtue. 2 Minutes.
  3. Sit down and stretch your legs out straight. Grab the bottoms of your feet and bend forward, resting your upper body upon your thighs. Bold the position for 2 1/2 Minutes. At this point Yogi Bhajan played the gong. Remain in the position, concentrating at your third eye point for another 2 1/2 Minutes.
  4. Lie on your back and deeply relax every part of your body, while you project your energy out of your third eye. 6 Minutes. Yogi Bhajan continued to play the gong during this meditation
CHAKRA BALANCING PRANAYAMA AND MEDITATION The chakras are referred to as energetic wheels or spheres that match up the endocrine system, For centuries modalities have included balancing the chakras which minimizes the body’s chances of dis-ease. The following pranayama has been developed to clear and balance the chakra system.  In this practice, we are going to clear our channels so that we become more finely tuned to our inner listening and receptivity. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath pulling the air through your nose and exhale out of your nose. Feel how your inhalation expands the front of your body, the back of your heart space. Feel how your exhalation sinks you further into the Earth. As you take your deep breath imagine you are breathing in a warm light and that it is filling the body providing energy to all your chakra centers. Breath deep into the belly and not into the shoulders. Your stomach should move in an out and your shoulders not up and down. Breath deeper, inhaling positive and encouraging energy, just picture it in your mind, the feeling of positive energy whatever that means to you. Do not worry if you are doing it right, the important thing is to just be doing it. As you breath out release the stress in your muscles. You can picture this as a cloud of black smoke being exhaled. Breath in white light breath out black smoke. Picture this the way that you feel most comfortable. With each breath pay attention to your muscles relaxing, your mind slowing down. Now bring your breath back to normal regular breaths, still breathing through your nose. Breathe into your belly as deep down as you can picturing the light entering your root chakra, a red glowing light of physical energy. This is your root, your balance starts here. Visualize a ball of red light glowing strongly at the base of your spine and reproductive region. The color red is associated with energy, power, courage and sense of rootedness.  When this energy center is balanced, one feels settled, secure and safe.  The energy of the root chakra is associated with the things in life that make us feel rooted like home and food and physical comfort.  Take a moment to reflect on the color red picturing it surrounding the root chakra. Now move up just below your belly button, in your mind’s eye. You are now at your sacral chakra, visualize an orange glow of energy continuing to get stronger as you breathe into the chakra.  The color orange is associated with relationships, creativity and happiness.  This is the center procreation, pleasure, feelings and emotions.  The warming color orange helps to encourage the free expression of enjoyment and pleasure in our relationships and helps us to release negative thought patterns.  Take a moment to reflect on the color orange, picturing it surrounding your sacral chakra. Move up to your Solar Plexus chakra, located an inch above the belly button and visualize the color yellow glowing at this chakra.  Yellow symbolizes health and mental clarity.  This energy center is associated with the digestive system and is the center of our self-confidence, empowerment and self-esteem.  A balanced solar plexus chakra helps us to have the ability to value ourselves and trust ourselves and others.  The color yellow supports us in having the courage to release negative views we may hold about ourselves and helps us to manifest what we need and want in life. Move now to your heart chakra. The green colored beautiful center of our emotions. Love with all your heart as you picture your love and energy flowing out from your chest. Each breath brings more and purer energy into your heart. Green is the color for harmony, healing, peace and love.  When the heart chakra is balanced, a feeling of unconditional love is experienced and radiated.  Balancing the heart chakra helps one to let go of resentment and be more forgiving.  It allows us to be more open to positive experience.  Keep your heart open and love the world around you, accepting others’ love as well as your own. Feel at peace as you visualize green, vibrant energy radiating from the heart chakra. Now to your throat chakra. Visualize a beautiful blue disc residing in your neck and vocal region. Communication is key here, keep your throat open and let the energy create an open airway, easy breathing. Here is where you give back to the world, where you comfort and communicate, sharing with others the beauty that you see.  When the throat chakra is balanced, we are better able to perceive and express the truth and share our ideas more easily.  Visualize a blue light swirling in your throat chakra. Next go to your third eye chakra, the indigo colored energy center located between your eyes, ever slightly above even with your eyes. Here is your vision center, indigo can help you to achieve the clarity needed to let go of the ideas and experiences that prevent us from perceiving correctly.  This is the chakra where we learn to enhance and trust our intuitive powers. Let the energy grow stronger as you breathe in allowing for your insight and intuition to grow as you meditate through and with the indigo chakra. Now you have reached your crown, moving up from your third eye to a location just above the top of your skull. Your connection to the divine and spiritual, to that greater power you are part of, that all is part of. The color here is violet.  A balanced crown chakra leads to spiritual fulfillment and a conscious awareness of life.  This is where we begin to embody the knowing and wisdom that we have learned.  This is our place of deep connection with our Inner Divine. Finally take time now to focus on the interaction of your chakras. Picture all of them as suns to help you in your development, and that their rays interact with each other, sharing energy, harmonizes, feeding ideas and power to each other. Feel your complete being as all 7 chakra centers glow together emanating a very strong power while they balance and align you. Continue to breathe easily, allowing the energy you breathe in to fill you. Spend a few minutes here. When you are ready open your eyes, come back into the room.
