Why do I have bad breath?

Bad breath can be socially and personally embarrassing. But why does it occur and what can we do about it?

Well as usual, let’s start with why does it occur? There are actually a number of reasons – I know, I am forever saying that…but its usually true. So let’s start there.

  • In your mouth: poor dental hygiene; bacterial overgrowth; left over food particles produce sulfuric compounds; dehydration – from drugs, lack of saliva; etc; gum disease
  • Oral habits: drinking, smoking, etc obviously, but they can also cause gum disease
  • Drugs can reduce saliva and increase odors, ie., nitrates, those for angina, chemotherapies, tranquilizers
  • Supplements can also cause a problem, i.e., especially if in large does
  • Insufficient production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach – not the gut; prevents effective elimination of the bad bacteria – how would you know?
    1. Lost the taste for meat – inability to digest it
    2. If you have been vegan/vegetarian – slows production of HCl
    3. You experience bloating, belching or gas after eating – not breaking down your foods
    4. You get heartburn or acid reflux – usually hypo not hyper – insufficient HCl acid prevents the pyloric valve from opening (heartburn) and the food stays in the stomach and starts to ferment and may even push the food up through the lower esophageal sphincter (Reflux)
    5. You have low iron count – because you are not producing sufficient HCl which is required to absorb iron
    6. You don’t have any breakfast appetite – food is not digesting properly
    7. Being hungry all the time can also be an issue – you are not absorbing your nutrients – because they are not getting broken down or metabolized
    8. Your nails are unhealthy – insufficient gut processing and nutrient absorption – very Ayurvedic
    9. Your perspiration is smelly – liver or kidney issues and you need to detox
  • Poor breakdown of food in the gastrointestinal system; bowel obstructions; vomiting
  • Liver issues, cancers and other metabolic issues can also cause odors

So what can you do about it?

  1. Get a healthy toothpaste – not commercial ones but good ones that don’t have sugar, GMO corn or floride in them – I use a Neem toothpaste
  2. Take products that help provoke HCl OR take a tbsp of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water before bed OR take 1 tsp baking soda in a ¼ C water when you get up
  3. Obviously if you are dehydrated, drink more “real” water…also water with lemon in it is a good way to start and end the day – but note the misinformation about drinking 8 cups of 8 oz (8×8 rule) of water
  4. Make sure you are getting sufficient ‘down time’ or rest. The Parasympathetic system has to be able to function and you need to turn off the active Sympathetic system – eating on the run; even eating standing up is not healthy – sit down; slow down; and relax during and after a meal
  5. If it is the gut – you want to attend to a pre/probiotic diet and anti-inflammatories for the immune system – you might need to take Transfer Factor; you might need to address issues like leaky gut syndrome, ulcerations, metal toxicity, etc
  6. If it is the liver, you want to make sure you have a healthy gut and then maybe do a liver detox; make sure you are making sufficient glutathione; and take herbs like dandelion, burdock, milk thistle, etc
  7. Real simple issues like eliminating the junk food; fast food; processed food; microwaved food; GMO food; etc is a base rule we should all abide by

Eating healthy provides the basis for a healthy mind and healthy emotions as well as a healthy body. it serves us all well. But start one step at a time. Too often, people go cold turkey and end up falling back on their old habits. Each week, start eliminating one habit or initiating a new habit. It tends to go further and we tend to be healthier.
