A striking bright light flashed in the sky over Grays Harbor County on Wednesday night, followed by a loud boom.
Reports started popping up all over social media, but what was behind the phenomenon wasn’t initially clear.
Grays Harbor County Sheriff Rick Scott told KOMO that he was driving from Olympia when he saw the flash.
“I saw a huge flash of what appeared to be orange light, light up the entire horizon to the west,” he said.
KING-TV reported that the boom even registered with the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network.
The Grays Harbor County dispatch center was flooded with calls reporting the light and the sound, but nothing earthly could be identified as the cause.
The National Weather Service confirmed to local emergency management that no severe weather events had occurred, and the Federal Aviation Administration and Western Air Defense Sector of the Washington Air National Guard reported no incidents.
