High Blood Pressure and Medications Seniors have long been prescribed Big Pharma medications for high blood pressure. Yet, the research shows that these hypertension medications do NOTHING for most patients, especially older people with stage 1 hypertension. They DON’T reduce the risk of heart attacks or strokes or death AND the studies have shown this repeatedly. So why do Allopathic physicians, aka, MDs keep prescribing these drugs? They have to follow the guidelines. Who creates the guidelines, the protocol and procedure that physicians have to follow? Big Pharma!!! What does the protocol say? If the patient has high blood pressure, they need to be treated with Big Pharma medications. BUT, in 2014, new guidelines were established in the Journal of American Medicine Association. According to the new protocol, patients over the age of 60 will no longer be medicated when they are at stage 1 hypertension, meaning blood pressure levels of 140/90. Instead physicians should only consider medications if the patient is 150/90 or higher.  Wiser physicians, understand that this number could be even higher. Especially, the older the patient gets. According to a research committee of 18 scientists – two were connected with Big Pharma – they found that healthy seniors increased their blood pressure by about 10% for each decade over 65 years of age. Now, on the other hand, blood pressure medications, can cause issues like dizziness and light headedness which of course can increase the possibility of falling and causing a lot of damage, including death. In addition, blood pressure medications tend to affect cognitive capacity, ie., memory loss. This memory loss is often misdiagnosed as dementia and then they are provided with yet another medication. High blood pressure medications, which are most commonly, diuretics,  are well known for depleting the body of important nutrients: magnesium, potassium, sodium which are important to healthy heart functioning!!! Loop diuretics are also known to deplete Vitamins B1, B6 and C. Others are known to reduce levels of zinc and B9 or folate. Oh dear!!! Now as a true health practitioner, as opposed to a symptom manager, I want to know what is causing the high blood pressure and attempt to resolve the problem. Very often, it is a reflection of life style: stress, poor diet, drinking, smoking, no exercise, etc. If we alter these issues, then Whola! It’s amazing what can happen. As a Dr of Nutrition, I am likely to provide them with a diet outline that allows their bodies to maximize their nutritional intake of vitamins, omega 3s, minerals, and phytonutrients. As a Master Herbalist, I am likely to provide them with nutrient dense herbs that strengthen the heart, liver, kidney and guts. There are a variety of herbs that are hugely beneficial and wonderfully effective. As a simple basic to start with, take a clove of garlic a day. Smash it, don’t cut it. Swallow it, don’t chew it. And you can have a great benefit from that alone. Did you know that garlic alone has repeatedly been shown to reduce high blood pressure in over 80% of the study participants? Garlic is wonderful for a variety of issues from cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis and (reduces lipid content in the arterial membranes) to reducing blood clotting to protecting the liver to anti-tumor to anti-microbial and anti-fungal and antiviral to immune booster to blood glucose levels. Garlic is most beneficial when crushed as opposed to chopped because when crushed an enzyme, alliinase, is activated and produces allicin from alliin. But there are 33 known sulfur compounds in garlic, in addition to, enzymes, 17 amino acids, minerals (calcium, copper, magnesium, potassium, selenium, zinc), vitamins (A, B1, and C), fiber and it increases anti-oxidants in the body (glutathione, superoxide dismutase, catalase). You might want to think about taking a clove of garlic a day, rather than Big Pharma’s medications! The choice is yours.
